Fukuoka Day 3

Saturday, May 17, 2014
Ninjinomatsubara (sort of!)
Karatsu

I gotta stop going to place that people blog about.  For one thing, they don't give directions very well so when I end up going to these places I get completely lost and irritated.  For example, I read in a blog that Ninjinomatsubara had these beautiful forests and if I take a short walk we'll end up at a beach.  So that was our first stop this morning.  But first, here's our hotel we're staying at.  It's literally a hop skip and a jump away from Hakata Station.  It's so convenient, I just love it!  When leaving the Central Gate (actually it's the east gate) head towards the left.  Before even leaving the station parking lot take the left right before Starbucks.  Walk about 200 yards and the Hotel Sunroute Hakata will be on the right.  There's also 2 Family Marts right next door and across the street from us.
IMG_0172

Ninjinmatsubara is about an hour and half from Hakata Station.  Just take the subway from Hakata Station towards Karatsu.  If you have a rail pass, you only need to purchase the subway ticket from Hakata to Meinohama, which was 300¥.  Once it leaves Meinohama Station it turns into a JR train.  You don't need to get off (like we did, but we hopped right back on), it will just keep on going.  When you get to your destination just show your rail pass to the train dude and you'll be on your way!
IMG_0173

When you get to Ninjinomatsubara, you'll see it's a cute little station.  There's not even train staff to make sure you paid your fare.  There's a little honor box saying to "place your ticket here."  I shoulda took a picture of it, but I forgot.
IMG_0175

actually, it's the one getting cut off in this pic
IMG_0176

When exiting the station, don't follow the path to the left, it will lead to a hospital...
IMG_0177

Instead go to the right and follow the road into town
IMG_0178

IMG_0179

When you get into town, you can either take a right or a left and it's pretty deserted.  There's a restaurant and a preschool at the end of the road and nothing else.  We didn't want to choose which way to go cause it would probably take up too much time to find the beach.  We turned around and went back to the station and headed to Karatsu.  See?  Not enough directions from the websites that I read.
IMG_0181

When we got to Karatsu I had to see the information girl for directions and a map (you should do the same, it's too complicated for me to explain here), but I asked her to show me a few things...Karatsu Burger, Matsukin Shoyu, Karatsu Castle, and the Kawashima Tofu shop.  All within walking distance (sort of, if you don't have sore legs like me!)

First stop, Karatsu Burger.  Randy was hungry, we didn't have much of a breakfast this morning and it was already 10:30 and he's been up since 4.  It's near their shopping arcade
IMG_0182

IMG_0183

IMG_0184

IMG_0185

We just ordered the regular "hanbahgah" for 280¥.
IMG_0186

I know it doesn't look like much but it was very tasty!
IMG_0188

Now we're off to see the castle...this is Yanagi Moat
IMG_0191

IMG_0190

Isn't this so cute?  It was at one of the construction sites
IMG_0192

We made it!  We never go in but. haha.
IMG_0197

IMG_0199

IMG_0206

IMG_0208

After the castle we went to the bus station so we can get some shoyu.  This was craziness.  Since the girl at the station gave me directions on the bus from JR Station, I had to ask the lady how to get there from the bus station.  It took them awhile but they said to take bus #1 at 12:19.  Fine.  We gotta wait a little bit but that's ok,  I can actually sit down and rest.  It was about 11:40 at the time.  So Randy went looking for more food and said he'll be back.  At about 12:00 the lady came running to me and said she made a mistake and that I should take the bus that was at the station now, and the bus driver was waiting for us.  But Randy was no where to be found!  Ughh!  I thanked the bus driver and told him never mind, he could leave.  The only problem is that the lady now said the next bus is at 12:40.  Damn.  Randy walked up 10 minutes later.  The bus lady felt bad and she was very nice so I gave her some macadamia nut candy for her troubles.

So we finally get on the bus and the bus driver tells us to get off...This is what I see when I get off the bus:
IMG_0209

OHMYGAWWWD.  Don't tell me that we went through all that and they're closed!  Randy rattled the door and a little boy peeked through the shades and he looked annoyed.  We then turned to the left and phew!  The store was open!
IMG_0210

IMG_0211

IMG_0213

There's a little tasting section in there and I was able taste a bunch of shoyu and ponzu sauces.  They were all very good so it was hard to choose.  We went by what was the smallest :)  Shoyu gets heavy ya know!

They also make their own amazake ice cream.  It's made out of a fermented rice.  It wasn't very creamy but it was very tasty.
IMG_0214

Damn, after leaving the shoyu store, Randy noticed that it wasn't very far from the station so he decided to start walking back.  My feet were sore!!  I haven't really recovered from  my wisteria trek and now he wants to walk another mile and a half back to the station?  :(  By the time I got to the tofu store I wasn't in the mood to try and figure out what tofu to taste and buy.  I totally passed out on the train for about 40 minutes.  Good thing it's a long ride back.

We ate dinner at the train station tonight, their 9th and 10th floors are filled with yummy looking restaurants.  We chose a cow tongue restaurant similart to Negishi.  It was yummy, and crowded!  Before dinner we headed up to the rooftop, there was an observation deck so we could see the city.  It was really cute, they had stuff for the little ones to play on.
IMG_0216

Even a little train!
IMG_0218

The view from up there is crap.  Sorry, but the city really isn't pretty and we weren't high enough to see anything.
IMG_0224

IMG_0226

This restaurant Rikyu is on 9F.  You should go early, there was a pretty long line when we left.  I think we left around 7.
IMG_0230

If you look to the right of him you'll see a bucket full of tongue!!
IMG_0231

I shoulda got the one without the curry and more meat.  4 pieces weren't enough.

Fukuoka Adventure Day 2

Friday, May 16, 2014
Nokoshima Island Park
Canal City

Another day in Japan, which means another day for sushi!  We started out later than usual today, no reason why, we just dilly dallied around until we decided to leave the room  First stop:  Sushi Zanmai!  This is our go-to 24 hour cheap sushi restaurant.  I didn't think there was one in Fukuoka but it seems it was only a couple of subway stops away.  We took the subway towards Meinohama and got off at the Tenjin Station, and Sushi Zanmai is only about an 8 minute walk away.  Sorry, no pics this morning, too busy enjoying my breakfast :)

IMG_0096

IMG_0097

A ten minute ferry ride from Meinohama Station (about 7? stops away from Hakata Station) will take you to Nokonoshima Island Park.  It's a cute little island, I didn't realize people actually lived on it. When you get to Meinohama Station, go out to the bus stop and be on the look out for bus #98.  We got there at 11:07, right as the bus was driving off...did you notice what time the next bus came?  There's nothing around there to help you kill the time...
IMG_0120

The bus will take you all the way to the ferry so don't worry about missing your stop.
IMG_0098

It was pretty cheap to get there...
IMG_0119

IMG_0099

Yes, I actually rode a boat!  I figured it was only a 10 minute ride so I had nothing to worry about.
IMG_0101

IMG_0102

We rented bikes to go around the island.  It was 300¥ per hour or 1000¥ per day.  We told the lady we wanted 2 bikes for 2 hours.  She said no, no, no 1000¥.  Uhhh, but we only wanted 2 hours.  No, no, no 1000¥.  Oh well, I just handed over 2000¥ and we were on our way.
IMG_0103

IMG_0104

IMG_0105

IMG_0106

You think it still works??
IMG_0109

I felt like I was on Shokogashiratai
IMG_0113

It got really hot so we stopped by a little mom and pop shop and got some ice cream
IMG_0115

It was really pretty from out there
IMG_0116

I was pooped so I returned my bike and got myself this orange drink that they make on the island.  I didn't like it.  Maybe I'm just used to American soda
IMG_0118

Weird.  I returned my bike about 2 hours later and the lady gave me back 400¥!  Randy came back around 20 mins later and he got back 400¥ too.  Maybe she was trying to tell us that we pay for all day but if we come back early then we get our money back.

We only rode around the south part of the island, the northern part is really steep and hard to ride.  We tried and ended up walking our bikes up about 100 yards and then quit.  We were gonna take a bus to the top to get to the park but we looked at the time and decided to get back to Hakata so we could go to Canal City.

Canal City is about a 10-15 minute walk from Hakata Station so it's very convenient.  Just take the West exit and go to the crosswalk to the left of the bus station and the subway entrance.
IMG_0121

IMG_0122

I really need to stop in this store before we leave...so cute yah?
IMG_0125

IMG_0126

Sorry, got distracted.  Just keep going straight until you see a slight fork in the road.  You can either go left or right, we took the right.  At the 7-11 take a left and you'll see Canal City in front of you!
IMG_0128

Canal City is just a plain ol shopping mall but Kathy told me to go check out a ramen restaurant called Ichiran.  Nope, it's not in the famous Ramen Stadium on the 5th floor, but in the little food area on B1.
IMG_0129

Look for the ramen in the rectangle bowls
IMG_0130

Ta-da!
IMG_0131

When you first get there, head to the vending machine and put in your order.  Hungry?  Go for the extra noodles.  You won't be disasppointed.
IMG_0145

Then when you get to your seat fill out what you want in your Ramen
IMG_0132

So cute.  You get your own little cubicle.  Hard to talk story though.  Randy was getting irritated with me cause I kept bothering him while he was trying to eat.
IMG_0135

There's about 4-5 rows here!
IMG_0137

And your food comes in about 5 minutes.  OHMYGAWWWWD.  This was the best ramen I've ever eaten.  **Jalna -- If we ever come to Fukuoka together I'll take you here everyday if you like.  Yah, it's that good.
IMG_0139

Did I press it?  HELL YAH I DID!
IMG_0141

Just fill out the paper in your stall and give um your money!
IMG_0142

I told Kathy that I never drink the broth when I eat saimin/ramen.  I was drinking the broth...I couldn't finish it but if I wasn't so darn full that bowl would be empty!  And it's a chain!  Too bad I can't read it but I'll remember the logo :)
IMG_0143

After all that pigging out we needed to go out and get some fresh air.  We left the mall and went out by the canal.  Yes, there really is a canal.  It was pretty and there was a nice breeze.  A nice way to digest our food...
IMG_0146

IMG_0147

IMG_0151

IMG_0155

All of the yatai carts were starting to set up...it was smellin really good out there.  Too bad we were too stuffed to the gills to sample some stuff.
IMG_0166

IMG_0169

IMG_0170

good night Fukuoka!
IMG_0171

I'm glad we ate early so I wouldn't have to go to bed feeling miserable.  See you tomorrow!  Note:  When we were walking back to our hotel we noticed the sign for Ichiran Ramen...right across the street from Hakata Station!  It's in the Sun Plaza building.  Score!

I'm in Fukuoka!

Thursday, May 15, 2014
Kawachi Fuji Garden
Tanga Market

Hi everyone!  Randy and I are spending a week in Fukuoka...I was in search for the Wisteria Garden in Yahata.  My friend Jenny told me about this place a couple of years ago and I was just dying to come and see it.  You never heard of it?  Yah it doesn't seem too popular, I don't know why, it's gorgeous!  So if you catch it during peak season, this is what it should look like:

So you see why I was so excited, right??  So excited that we got off one stop too early.  But that's ok, we got to sit down and eat our musubis since we didn't wanna eat it on the train.  So, if you plan to go, you can take a train (JR Kagoshima Line) from Hakata Station, direct to Yahata Station. It's about an hour ride.  DON'T get off at Kurosaki Station like we did (unless you're hungry and want to eat your musubi)

We made it!

When you get out of the station, go to the left and you will see a bus stop.  I read somewhere that you can catch the #56 bus and get off at the Elementary school.  DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT GO THIS ROUTE!  It's a hell of a trek up to the Garden.  Instead, wait at the bus stop and take the free shuttle up to the onsen.  The bus will look like this:

When you finally get to the onsen (it's a pretty far drive), go back out to the entrance and walk up the hill about 400 yards and the garden will be on the right.

by the time I saw this sign I was so excited!!

Then UGH.  Craaaaaaaaap.  Uh, yah.  Damnit.  I missed it by one week.  One stinkin week!  We met up with a guy named Logan from New Zealand and he was disappointed too.  Here's what I got...

I can just imagine how pretty it  must've been...

The view from up there was gorgeous!

I was thinking of making our christmas card from this place this year but I guess not...

After we were done at this place I made the mistake of asking Logan how we were gonna get back to the station.  He said he was gonna walk back to the bus stop if we wanted to join him.  I didn't realize how far it was.  We shoulda just took the shuttle back.  My feet were so sore, getting blisters (wrong kind of socks) and I was just plain tired.  It musta been aboiut 2 miles that we had to walk to finally get to the bus stop.  There was one plus side, there was a pretty lake that I could get some pictures of along the way

After about an hour we finally made it to the bus stop.  So we thought.  We had no idea what time the bus was coming so we ended up waiting for another 20 minutes.  Then the bus shows up and the guy tells us this wasn't the bus stop and we had to walk another 40 yards down the street.

So, if you're stupid enough to walk like us then this is where the bus stop is

When the bus came to its final destination, IT WASN'T EVEN YAHATA STATION!!!  Waaaaahhh!!!  Shiiiiiit.  We had to walk another half a mile or so back to the station.  That really sucked.  I swear we must've wasted about 2 hours by not taking the shuttle.  Now I got sore feet and I had to go buy some vaseline from the pharmacy.  Thank god he could understand a little english!

Since we came all this way I told Randy we should go to Tanga Market.  It's one of the oldest in Japan, and it's sorta like Ameyoko or Tsukiji Market.  From Yahata Station, jump back on the train to Kokura Station (get back on the same line you got off on).  When you get to Kokura Station, hop on the monorail and go two stops (100¥) and get off at Tanga Station.  The marketplace is right downstairs

I was too pooped to take any pictures in here, plus there wasn't anything special.  Except this:

2900¥ for mango???  What daaa??

Forgot to take pics at dinner too, I was too exhausted.  We went into a local bar and ate sashimi, yakitori and chicken wings.  It was really good.  Couldn't read a damn thing on the menu and the staff could barely speak Englsh. We got lucky!

See you guys tomorrow!

Oh yah, if you wanna see more pics of what the garden is supposed to look like, go check it out here:
