Baklava

I always wanted to try and make Baklava but was always scared to.  It looks really difficult and I've never really worked with phyllo dough before.  It's my co-worker's birthday (happy birthday Joanne!) so I thought I'd finally give it a try.  I found a recipe on pinterest, it was good because it had lots of pictures and a video.  You can find the recipe here.  Of course she made it look super easy, with her hair all nice and not a drip of sweat running down her.  Anyways, this recipe totally tests your patience.  It uses 40 layers of phyllo dough, and after every layer you brush melted butter on it.  The first step is 10 layers.  So yup, dough, butter, dough, butter...etc.  I swear after 5 layers if you're not paying attention you're gonna lose count and not know what number you're on.  After the 10th layer you sprinkle your nuts and then start again, except with only 5 layers.  Then nuts.  Then 5 more layers. Don't forget to butter your sheet after every one!! Sigh...so here's how it went

10 sheets
Nuts
5 sheets
Nuts
5 sheets
Nuts
5 sheets
Nuts
5 sheets
Nuts
10 sheets

By the time I finished my last set was 11 sheets.  Who knows where I skimped.  Good thing they're really thin so you can't tell.  I only took one picture.  I don't know how other people blog their stuff.  My kitchen was a mess.  There's no way I was pulling out my camera for this....

It actually was pretty tasty!  It was a bitch cutting it, you have to do it before you throw it in the oven so your layers were moving all over the place.  I don't know how the girl got hers to look so nice.  I didn't even bother to take a picture of my pan.

What if you use a big pizza cutter wheel thingy to cut or would that smash it? Looks good!

Michele - I don't think it will be deep enough. And you have to cut it diagonally in the pan so the edges will be hard to get. The middle will probably work though!

OMG, that's the thickest baklava I ever saw in my life!!! You are so amazing. I like how you described the layers . . . easy to understand that way. Did you use your Kamikoto knife to cut?

I thought it seemed kind of thick too...I wonder if I make it thinner it won't be as hard to cut and it will be easier. No, I didn't use the knife, I was debating if I should but my hands were kinda oily and that buggah is so sharp I didn't want it to slip and cut my fingers off

Aaaaaaaaaaaaah, you just made me cringe. I get da-kine blade phobia. I have to leave the kitchen when Landon's chopping stuff.

I like your thick-looking baklava . . . makes it look special. Normally baklava look stingy to me . . . flat and expensive.

Only a good cook would try make baklava. I would NEVAH try, but I am always so willing to eat and be taste tester.

I gave your vegan chocolate chip cookie recipe to my friend, just so casually and sly. Hopefully she makes it and shares - after all, I gave her da recipe, right?

N - It's a good thing Jalna is on the vegan kick, and it looks like she'll be on it for awhile...so I won't have to worry about making it again for a long time! :)
